Writing a Book for Doctors: Why Authority Matters More Than Royalties

Over 90 days ago, my book became an Amazon bestseller in investing and personal finance. That milestone reinforced something important about writing a book for doctors and professionals who want to share expertise.

Amazon didn’t pay me a dime for three months.

For roughly 90 days, my royalties were effectively £0.

I simply had to wait.

That delay surprised a few people who assumed that bestseller status immediately translates into income.

The reality is different.

Thankfully, more than half of the book’s sales came through other channels, including our website and the wider Moneywise Doctor community.

But the real lesson had very little to do with royalties.

Because the book had already delivered far more value than the royalty payments ever could.

The Real Return From Writing a Book

When most people imagine writing a book, they picture it as a direct income stream.

Sell enough copies and the royalties will follow.

In reality, book royalties (especially in nonfiction) are rarely the primary financial reward.

The true return comes from what the book creates around it.

Since publishing The Moneywise Doctor, the impact has been visible in several ways:

• New leads discovering the platform
• Meaningful connections with doctors worldwide
• Collaboration opportunities
• Increased trust before conversations even begin
• Revenue growth through education and workshops

In other words, the book became a trust accelerator.

It allowed ideas to travel far beyond what a blog post or social media post could accomplish.

Authority Before Conversation

A book changes the dynamic of professional conversations.

When someone reads your work, they often arrive with a level of trust already established.

Many doctors reach out after reading The Moneywise Doctor with messages like:

“Your book was such an eye-opener for me.”

“Thank you for providing this wonderful financial guide for medics.”

“This finally helped me connect the dots.”

Those messages highlight something important.

The book does not just transfer information.

It builds understanding.

Readers begin to see how financial systems, tax structures, and long-term investing strategies fit together.

That clarity often leads them to explore more resources within the Moneywise Doctor ecosystem.

For example, many readers continue learning through articles such as this overview of tax thresholds affecting high earners.

One piece of clarity naturally leads to another.

Why Books Build Trust So Effectively

In the digital age, information is everywhere.

Articles, podcasts, short videos, and social posts compete constantly for attention.

But a book requires something different.

It requires sustained engagement.

When someone spends several hours reading your ideas, they are doing more than skimming content.

They are investing time.

That investment creates familiarity and trust.

It’s why books continue to hold such authority even in an era dominated by quick content.

Publishing also signals commitment to expertise. Institutions such as Amazon have made distribution easier than ever, but readers still perceive books as structured knowledge rather than casual opinions.

That perception carries significant weight.

The Unexpected Ripple Effects

One of the most interesting outcomes of publishing the book has been how widely its influence travels.

Some readers join the Moneywise Doctor community.

Others attend masterclasses or workshops.

A few reach out about collaborations.

And many buy multiple copies to give to colleagues.

Those ripple effects were never part of a formal strategy.

They simply emerged as the ideas spread.

A book acts like a central anchor for those ideas.

Instead of scattered thoughts across multiple platforms, the entire philosophy lives in one coherent place.

The Chapter Doctors Mention Most

Among readers, one section often stands out.

Chapter 6 of The Moneywise Doctor is called The Investment Protocol.

In that chapter, I share insights drawn from more than twenty years of investing experience.

The focus isn’t complex financial engineering.

It’s simplicity.

Many doctors feel overwhelmed when they first approach investing.

Markets seem unpredictable. Advice often feels contradictory.

So the chapter introduces seven practical steps designed specifically for busy medics who want to start investing without unnecessary complexity.

The goal is to replace confusion with structure.

Structure leads to confidence.

Confidence leads to action.

Why Most Books Fail as Income Strategies

If someone writes a book purely expecting royalties to generate significant income, disappointment is common.

Book sales alone rarely create meaningful revenue unless the scale becomes extremely large.

The real financial value usually appears elsewhere:

• Courses and educational programs
• Speaking opportunities
• Professional collaborations
• Community building
• Strategic partnerships

The book becomes the foundation of credibility supporting those opportunities.

Seen through that lens, the delayed Amazon royalty payments become almost irrelevant.

A Different Way to Think About Publishing

A more useful way to think about writing a book is this:

A book is not primarily a product.

It is a platform builder.

It allows ideas to travel beyond personal networks.

It introduces your thinking to people you may never meet directly.

And when those readers find value, they naturally seek deeper engagement.

That engagement can take many forms.

But it always begins with trust.

The Long-Term Impact

The most valuable outcomes from publishing The Moneywise Doctor did not appear in the first week.

Or even the first month.

They continue unfolding months later as new readers discover the ideas and apply them to their own financial lives.

Some begin investing for the first time.

Others restructure their tax planning.

Many simply gain clarity about how financial systems work.

That impact extends far beyond book sales.

Authority Compounds Over Time

Much like investing, authority compounds gradually.

A single article can inform.

A workshop can teach.

But a book can influence thousands of readers for years.

And when those readers begin sharing the ideas with colleagues, the ripple effect continues.

That is the true power of publishing.

Not the royalty statement.

But the trust that grows long after the book leaves your hands.

If you’ve ever thought about writing a book yourself, it raises an interesting question.

Would you write it for the royalties… or for the authority it creates?

Many Medics Feel Pressure To Start Investing

But pressure is not a strategy.
Clarity is.
