At a recent conference, I was invited to speak on a topic I care deeply about: Your Finances as a Medic.
After my session, a retired NHS consultant, distinguished, calm, probably in his early 70s, came up to me quietly.
He shook my hand and said something that stuck:
“Thank you for all you’re doing for doctors. I only wish someone had taught us this earlier.”
Then he shared his story.
The Consultant Who Got Lucky
He had retired with a decent lifestyle, but not because he understood investing.
He admitted this openly:
He didn’t know what he was doing.
He didn’t really understand his investments.
He just had a few friends who encouraged him to do something.
So he did.
Thankfully, it turned out well for him. His NHS pension played a role, but it wasn’t enough on its own.
And without those extra investments?
He said he wouldn’t be living the way he is now.
The Hard Truth About Retirement for Doctors
This wasn’t the first time I’d heard a version of this story.
In fact, nearly every time I speak with doctors near retirement, I hear a similar regret:
“I thought the pension would be enough.”
But enough for what, exactly?
🩹 Enough to survive? or
🛫 Enough to thrive and retire early with options?
That’s the question I wish more doctors asked earlier in their careers.
The 3 Biggest Financial Mistakes Doctors Make
After over 20 years of personal investing and helping colleagues do the same, here’s what I’ve consistently seen:
❌ Never starting
Fear, overwhelm, or lack of time keeps many from investing; but meanwhile, inflation quietly eats away their cash.
❌ Investing in what they don’t understand
Too many jump in without clarity, and pay the price in poor returns, high fees, or outright loss.
❌ Ignoring risk management
Overconfidence or underestimation leads to avoidable losses; and fear of risk becomes fear of investing entirely.
If You’re Early in Your Career: Learn While It’s Easy
This is the best time to build your financial foundation. Not when you’re “ready,” but now, while your earnings grow and time is on your side.
If You’re Later in Your Career: It’s Not Too Late
But it might be time to act.
You may not have 30 years to wait out your mistakes.
That’s why education and clarity matter more than ever.
