Doctors often make big financial mistakes, but IMG doctors? We walk into financial traps left and right—and it’s painful to watch.
I’ve experienced this first-hand—both personally as an IMG and through my work with Moneywise Doctor.
When I moved to the UK as an IMG, I had no clue about the financial system. I knew a bit about investing, but the UK credit system, mortgages, tax laws, ISAs, and NHS pensions? Whole different ballgame.
I still remember walking into a bank in Nottingham and hearing the word “ISA” for the first time in 2015! It felt like uncovering a hidden financial weapon.
When I first tried to get a mortgage, I thought I had a perfect credit score—only to find out there was much more to consider. Fellow IMG colleagues wasted weeks with advisors who didn’t understand how to help doctors on a visa, only to hit dead ends.
There are countless stories of doctors making the wrong pension move or making disastrous investment decisions based on poor ‘advice’ or a lack of understanding of the system.
These experiences helped me realise just how many IMG doctors are making costly mistakes simply because no one teaches us how the system works here.
IMG doctors are getting crushed by:
→ Ignoring the UK credit system
→ Missing out on tax relief
→ Falling into the 60% tax trap.
→ Taking advice from financial “experts” who don’t understand their unique issues.
→ Jumping into mortgages without considering long-term financial flexibility.
The lessons are clear:
– Earning more won’t fix poor financial decisions.
– Mistakes come from not knowing, not from not earning enough.
– Overlooking tax advantages or delaying smart investments will cost you big in the long run.
– Before taking financial advice, ensure you are dealing with a professional who understands your unique situation and has experience dealing with similar circumstances.
What to do:
1. Take control of your finances. Be intentional—don’t leave it to chance.
2. Invest in your financial education—it will save you headaches.
3. If you need one, choose a mortgage advisor who understands IMG doctors, not just a financial salesperson.
4. Know your financial health—a correct diagnosis aids effective treatment. Start with tools like the free Financial Health quiz.
