As an NHS professional in the UK, staying on top of your finances is essential—especially when it comes to making sure you’re maximising your tax relief opportunities. However, recent changes introduced by HMRC could make the process of claiming tax relief for doctors on professional subscriptions like the General Medical Council (GMC) and the British Medical Association (BMA) more cumbersome.

⚠️ What You Need to Know About HMRC’s New Requirement

HMRC has shifted the landscape for claiming tax relief on professional expenses like your GMC, BMA, BDA, Royal College, Professional Indemnity, and NMC fees. Medics who used to claim their professional subscriptions online now have an extra hurdle to jump: you’ll need to provide physical receipts or proof of payment when claiming tax relief.

The Financial Impact on Medics

You’re entitled to claim back these professional expenses as tax relief, and for many doctors, this can add up to £2,500 annually. In some cases, where multiple years have gone unclaimed, you could be looking at refunds of as much as £10,000! Up until now, you could claim the current year plus 4 years back, all online without the need for physical paperwork.

But now, that’s changing.

What’s Changing?

Before this recent update, the process of claiming tax relief was fairly straightforward—submit your claims online, keep your proof of your subscriptions just in case, and HMRC would process your relief. Now, HMRC is introducing additional friction:

  • You must post your physical receipts or proof of payment to HMRC in order to claim tax relief.
  • The move adds paperwork, time, and effort, especially for busy professionals who are already stretched for time.

For doctors, dentists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, this is a frustrating development, especially as it introduces delays and increases the likelihood that many eligible claims could be missed due to these additional hurdles.

Why This Change Is a Step Backwards

At MoneyWise Doctor, we’ve helped thousands of doctors and healthcare professionals successfully claim tax relief, saving them both time and money through our step-by-step guides and videos.

However, this recent change by HMRC feels like a step in the wrong direction. Many medics were already unaware of the tax relief they were entitled to. The added complication of physical receipts could deter even more professionals from claiming back what’s rightfully theirs.

Even when the process was fully online, the majority of medics were unaware or lacked the time to claim until our resources guided them through the process.
