  • Discover Personal Finance Strategies for Healthcare Professionals with Moneywise Doctor

Hello and welcome to MoneywiseDoctor.com, your sensible guide to personal finance for healthcare professionals.

I am Dr. Ndubuisi ‘Andy’ Egwim. I am thrilled to share my personal finance journey with you, as I have been fortunate to have achieved my goal of attaining a level of financial freedom that allows me to work on my own terms and live life on my own schedule. In simple terms, I no longer have nor need a regular salaried job or what some will call a 9-5 ( or even 8-6). I’m not yet 100% retired, and no, I am not writing this, sitting on a Beach in Bahamas, sipping Pina Colada like some of the teenage YouTube ‘internet business gurus’!. However, I am now able to choose what work I do and get to focus on what brings me the maximum fulfillment and gives me energy.

My Journey to Financial Freedom as a Doctor

It is hard to describe the gushing feeling of freedom I experienced in December 2022 when I resigned from my last Salaried job. I have no plans to ever return to a salaried job again. Taking weeks or even months to work on passion projects without worrying about bills is a luxury I’m fortunate to have. Having come this far on my journey to financial freedom, I’m truly grateful and never take it for granted.

Lessons Learned About Personal Finance for Healthcare Professionals

Along the way, I have learned many valuable lessons about personal finance for healthcare professionals that I want to share with you. As a doctor, I understand firsthand how overwhelming it can be for healthcare professionals when managing personal finances, especially for a clinician who works long hours.

The Challenges of Managing Personal Finance for Doctors

After several years of gruelling study and demanding training, you now have a rewarding career that allows you to help others and make a difference in the world. You also have a decent income that comes with it, or so you think at first. However, you suddenly discover that your income doesn’t seem to go as far as you had imagined. Furthermore, when it comes to managing your finances, you may feel like you don’t have things under control, especially with multiple advisors, websites and social media teenage ‘financial experts’ who are all keen to tell you the latest tips to strike it filthy rich without doing any work.

Why doctors are vulnerable to bad financial advice

From my experience with helping thousands of doctors and other healthcare workers, the key issues and sad mistakes seem to occur repeatedly, making it clear that there is a need for personal finance guidance or training for doctors. Sadly, this is not something that we may have come across at any point in our multiple years of training. Unfortunately, this lack of understanding about how finances work exposes doctors to being taken advantage of by fraudulent ‘investment brokers’, ‘financial advisers’, or other finance industry professionals who don’t have their best interests at heart.

Most doctors often realize too late that they have either entered into a bad deal or missed golden opportunities that could have helped secure their financial peace of mind.

Common personal finance questions for healthcare professionals

Some questions that I have to deal with several times daily and questions you may have yourself include things like

  • How can I assess if I’m on the right financial path as a doctor or healthcare professional?
  • How can I tell if I am financially healthy as a medic? Am I missing something?
  • How do I save for retirement as a Locum doctor?
  • How can I protect my income in case of disability or illness?
  • What are the steps I need to take to buy my first house?
  • How do I get the best mortgage for my house purchase?
  • What proven side hustles can I start as a doctor to increase my income streams without leaving my primary job?
  • How do I choose the best credit cards for myself?
  • What pitfalls do I need to look out for when investing in buy-to-let property in the UK?
  • What investment opportunities are available to a doctor to provide passive income?
  • How can I improve my credit score to help me get the best deal for my mortgage application?
  • How do I manage my taxes to ensure that I pay a fair tax and am not short-changing myself?
  • Should I work via a Personal service company as a Limited company for my services as a Locum doctor or is is better to work via PAYE ( Pay as you earn) ?
  • How do I negotiate my salary or Locum rates as a doctor?
  • How do I create a practical budget and stick with it?
  • What types of insurance do I need to cover my medical practice?
  • How do I find the best insurance cover for my car?

Some financial advisers and finance industry professionals don’t have the best interests of healthcare workers at heart and take advantage of many doctors who ask these important questions. Compared to other professionals or business people with similar high incomes, doctors are particularly vulnerable to bad and expensive financial advice. This is because, unlike other professionals who had to have had some real life experience with managing financial issues, doctors have no such experience in their training or work. Additionally, an average doctor is very trusting and has high intergrity as this is a core requirement to work in the healthcare field. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for professionals who work in the finance industry. This creates an imbalance that often doesn’t work the doctor’s favour.

Strategies and tips for achieving financial freedom

As someone who has experienced firsthand the struggles that come with navigating personal finance and going on the journey to financial freedom, I want to share my experience with you.  It’s not just about saving money – it’s about making your money work very hard for you.
