Today, thousands of UK doctors are starting new roles or new rotations, whether as resident doctors, consultants, or GPs. New beginnings are a great time for a fresh start and to take stock and gain momentum.

Starting a new role is exciting and brings many opportunities, but it also comes with financial responsibilities. When I first started my career, I quickly learned that financial well-being is just as important as excelling in your medical role.

Why Financial Wellbeing Matters for NHS Doctors

Start Early for Long-Term Financial Stability

The earlier you start managing your finances wisely, the better positioned you’ll be to achieve long-term financial stability and freedom. This principle is particularly important for doctors, who often begin earning significant salaries later than other professionals due to the extended training period.

Essential Financial Tips for Doctors Starting New Jobs

1. Understand Your Tax Code

Ensuring you’re on the correct tax code is crucial to avoid overpaying or underpaying taxes. This is especially important for doctors with multiple income streams, such as locum work or private practice. Speak with a specialist accountant if you’re unsure about your tax code.

2. Calculate Your Take-Home Pay

Many resident doctors don’t know how much tax they pay or what their take-home pay should be—which can lead to costly mistakes. If you don’t know what you should be earning after deductions or how much tax you’re paying, how will you spot if you’re overpaying or approaching the dreaded 60% tax trap as a doctor?

You can use free resources like the NHS Salary Calculator to work out your take-home pay after PAYE tax, NIN, and NHS Pension deductions.

3. Avoid Lifestyle Creep

With a higher salary, it can be tempting to upgrade your lifestyle immediately. However, maintaining a budget and saving or investing the extra income is a smarter approach. Avoiding lifestyle creep helps ensure that your financial growth matches your career growth.

3. Build an Emergency Fund

Setting aside 3-6 months’ worth of living expenses can protect you in case of unexpected financial setbacks. An emergency fund is a safety net that provides peace of mind, allowing you to focus on your medical career without financial stress.

4. Invest in Your Future

Consider investing in a Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) or other investment vehicles to grow your wealth over time. Investing is a powerful tool for building long-term financial security, and starting early can significantly impact your retirement savings.

5. Get Financial Protection

Ensure you have adequate life and income protection insurance tailored to your needs as a doctor. Financial protection is essential to safeguard your income and provide for your family in case of illness or injury that prevents you from working.

By following these tips, doctors can ensure that they excel in their medical roles and set themselves up for financial success.
