Are You a Risky Investor Without Even Realizing?

You might think you’re playing it safe.

Maybe you’re not investing at all. Just stacking cash in a savings account, assuming that’s the cautious path.

But here’s the truth:

Your current saving and investment choices might be silently working against your future goals.

“Moderate Risk” Isn’t Always the Safe Bet

Let’s say you selected “moderate risk” on your investment platform.

Sounds like a sensible middle ground, right?

🚨 Not always.

If you’re a doctor in your 30s or 40s, with 20+ working years ahead and a stable NHS income, that “moderate” risk setting may be too cautious.

And the result?

You could be sacrificing hundreds of thousands in potential gains over your lifetime.

Risk Appetite vs. Risk Capacity: Know the Difference

Most people never separate these two.

But for doctors who want to build wealth intentionally, this distinction is crucial:

Risk Appetite = How You Feel

Emotional.

It’s about how comfortable you are with ups and downs in the market.
Do you panic when prices drop? Do you prefer certainty, even at the cost of long-term growth?

Risk Capacity = What You Can Afford

Logical.

It’s based on real-life factors like:

  • Age

  • Income

  • Emergency fund

  • Investment horizon

  • Financial goals

You might feel cautious…

But if you:
✅ Have a reliable income (e.g., NHS salary)
✅ Don’t need the invested money for 10+ years
✅ Have a solid emergency fund
…then your actual capacity for risk is likely higher than you think.

And that means you may need to shift your strategy – more equities (stocks), fewer bonds or cash – to stay on track.

Don’t Guess. Assess.

This isn’t personalised advice.
But it is a wake-up call to stop making investing decisions based on guesswork or outdated fear.

Instead of picking a random “risk level,” let’s help you make informed moves with confidence.
