Why Every UK Doctor Needs an Emergency Fund, And How to Build One Fast

Have you got enough savings to survive three tough months?
If not, you’re not alone.

📉 In our recent Financial Health Survey of 959 medics, 42% said “NO.”
That’s nearly 1 in 2 doctors in the UK with no emergency fund to fall back on.

But here’s the surprising part:

💼 I regularly meet senior doctors earning £100k+ with zero savings or tax-efficient investments.
Yet they’re dabbling in:

  • Crypto

  • Startups

  • Options trading

  • (Even vibranium mines in Wakanda 😅)

This isn’t about recklessness.
It’s about being underprepared, because nobody ever taught us how to build a proper financial buffer.

Let’s fix that.

What Is an Emergency Fund (And Why UK Doctors Must Have One)

An emergency fund isn’t a luxury. It’s your financial crash trolley.

Think of it as your financial defibrillator – the one thing you never want to scramble for when a crisis hits.
And trust me, many doctors learn the hard way.

From sudden illness to delayed locum pay, life throws curveballs. If you don’t have a buffer, stress multiplies.

How UK Doctors Can Build an Emergency Fund Quickly

Here’s what’s worked for 3,500+ doctors in the Moneywise Doctor community:

1️⃣ Start with 1 Month’s Expenses

Don’t aim for perfection. Just begin.
Target 3 – 6 months eventually, but your first month’s expenses saved is a huge win.

2️⃣ Keep It Separate

“Out of sight, out of spend.”
A Cash ISA, basic savings account, or premium bonds. Just don’t keep it in your current account.

3️⃣ Find the Money Without Earning More

You don’t need to take on extra shifts. Just take one hour this week to:

  • Cancel unused subscriptions

  • Slash ghost gym fees

  • Negotiate bills (call utility and broadband providers. This one really works)

  • Sell stuff lying idle

  • Redirect bonuses, backpay, or tax refunds

Each recovered pound brings peace of mind closer.

4️⃣ Automate It

Set it. Forget it. Build it.

Use a standing order – either a fixed amount or % of income.
We use the AMASS method at Moneywise Doctor (I’ll explain that in another blog post).

5️⃣ Use It Only for Emergencies

Game consoles? ❌
Sick parent, boiler breakdown, delayed salary? ✅

If you wouldn’t use it in A&E, don’t use it here.
